Defender says he's feeling ready ahead of the start of the season
Defender Mark Phillips says he is ready for the season to get underway after coming through 170 minutes in three days.
Mark played the full 90 minutes against Real Madrid C in the searing heat, before featuring for 85 minutes at Roots Hall on Friday night against Queens Park Rangers.
The 30-year-old is confident he is ready for the season's start against Plymouth Argyle and hopes he can feature again against West Ham United XI on Monday evening.
He said: “I’m feeling really good at the moment and was really pleased to get through nearly 180 minutes in three days.
“There will be a lot more tests of us like that throughout the season so it is good to get that feel for it during pre-season.
“I’ve played nearly 180 minutes in three days but I’d really like to be involved against West Ham on Monday as well.
“There’s nothing that can prepare you for that first game of the season but all we can do is make sure we’re in the best shape possible and I feel like I’m there now, ready for it to start.”
Mark was pleased with Blues’ performance against Championship side QPR, but insists cutting out goals from set pieces is important.
He said: “I thought we played well, especially during the first-half as we caused the problems and had quite a few chances to score.
“It was disappointing to concede from set pieces and we can’t let that happen come the first game of the season.
“But we played some good football and it was good to come back and play so quickly after Real Madrid C.
“I think today, with a bit more quality opposition, gave us a better idea of how it’s going to be come the first game of the season.
“We just need to put in another good performance against West Ham on Monday and then I’m confident we’ll be ready for the start of the campaign.”
