Jack Payne signs professional deal

Youngster has signed a one-year professional contract

Southend United are pleased to announce that youngster Jack Payne has signed a one-year professional contract with the Club.

Payne was injured towards the end of last season meaning he was unable to showcase his ability to new manager Phil Brown.

But the youngster was asked to come back for pre-season and show what he can do.

Following Saturday’s game against Great Wakering, in which Payne impressed during the first-half, Brown has moved to offer him a pro deal.

Speaking after Saturday’s game, Phil said: “I was very impressed with Jack Payne, he played with a lot of confidence and was probably one of the best players on the pitch in the first-half.

“He was injured when I arrived at the Club which was a shame but we asked him to come in for pre-season.

“I’d said to him, ‘show me what you can do in the next three friendlies’, but he’s done enough against Great Wakering to make the step up.

“I think we’ve got a very good prospect here with us and I’m sure he’s got a very bright future in football.”

Payne said: “I’m delighted to have been offered a professional contract with Southend.

“I’ve really enjoyed pre-season so far and was pleased to play 45 minutes on Saturday.

“I’m now just going to focus on working really hard this pre-season and impressing the manager.”

Payne joined Blues at the age of 15 after being spotted playing for his district.
