Great Wakering Rovers 2-3 Southend United
Freddy Eastwood's 90th minute winner ensured Blues got off their pre-season friendly schedule up and running with a win in the searing heat at Burroughs Park.
Essex Senior League opponents Great Wakering Rovers gave Blues a real scare, leading 2-0 at half-time, but goals from Cleveland Taylor, Ryan Auger and Eastwood - all in the second half - gave Blues the win.
After two weeks of hard pre-season training, Phil Brown opted to name two different XI's for each half.
Phil Brown named three trialists in the first half eleven; Kane Hemmings, Jacob Erskine and Ben Coker, as well as new signing John White.
Blues almost made the perfect start inside a minute as Jack Payne, captaining the side in the first half, played in Anthony Straker. The midfielder saw his shot well tipped over by Adam Seal.
Two minutes later and Blues were behind. Gary Paterson picked the ball up 20-yards from goal and fired a low left-footed shot beyond goalkeeper Daniel Bentley.
Ryan Cresswell hit the post with a header and Payne shot straight at Seal as Blues looked for an equaliser.
But instead of drawing level, Blues fell further behind when Paterson beat Luke Prosser to the ball and fired past Bentley.
Blues almost responded immediately but Kevan Hurst’s curling chip bounced over off the crossbar.
Phil Brown fielded a completely different XI in second half including four trialists.
It was one of those who got Blues back in the game as Cleveland Taylor connected well with a volley from the edge of the box to make it 2-1.
Ryan Auger then made it 2-2 in the 80th minute as he found space to stride into before curling hme with his left foot.
With seconds remaining Eastwood picked up the ball inside the box and fired low across the goalkeeper into the far corner.
