Atkinson becomes second summer signing

4 July 2013

Midfielder has penned a two-year deal after his release from League 1 side Bradford City.

Southend United are delighted to announce the arrival of midfielder Will Atkinson on a two-year contract.

The 24-year-old has joined Blues after his release from League 1 side Bradford City, with whom he made 57 appearances for last season.

Will began his career at Hull City in 2007 but made just eight appearances for the Tigers during his five-year stay.

Blues boss Phil Brown worked with Will at the Tigers and was pleased to have linked back up with the midfielder. He said: “Will had such a fantastic work rate and desire to succeed and I remember that extremely well from our time at Hull.

“I’m delighted that he has joined the Club, he’s another player, just like John White, who fits the bill perfectly and I’m looking forward to working with him again.”

During Will’s time with the now Premier League side he enjoyed loan spells at Port Vale in 2007, Mansfield in 2008, Rochdale in 2009, 2010 and 2011, Rotherham in 2011 and Plymouth in 2012.

In January 2012, Will joined Bradford on loan and made 12 appearances during his spell with them.

The midfielder had done enough to impress Phil Parkinson and he signed for Bradford permanently in July 2012.

Last season he scored three goals in his 57 games and played against Wigan, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Swansea in Bradford’s memorable Capital One Cup run.

Phil Brown added: “I spoke with Phil Parkinson about him and he had nothing but positive things to say.

“He made 57 appearances last season for Bradford and played a big part in helping them earn promotion via the play-offs and in their Capital One Cup run.”

Shortly after signing, Will said: “I’m really pleased to have agreed a deal and I can’t wait to get started.

“I’m a little bit behind with pre-season training but I’ll work as hard as I can over the next four weeks to make sure I’m 100% come the start of the season.

“We’ve got quite a few pre-season games and hopefully I can play a part in those to boost my fitness levels.

“The manager and the Club have shown plenty of ambition in the talks we’ve had and hopefully I can earn another promotion with Southend this season.”

Exclusive interviews with Will and Phil will be available on Blues Player.
