An update with Phil Brown

9 July 2013

Blues boss on Jack Payne, current transfer activity and the pre-season trip to Madrid

Brown on Jack Payne’s professional contract:

“It’s great news that he has signed because I think we’ve got a very good little player. I sat him down today and spoke to him and basically said the hard work starts now, and that’s because it really does. He’s done ever so well to earn a professional contract but now it’s about kicking on and showing everyone what you can do. He showed some great ability on Saturday against Great Wakering and he’ll be involved again against Bishop’s Stortford and Braintree. He has shown such passion and desire in the training sessions and we’ve pushed him quite a bit and he’s come through with flying colours. I’m very pleased he will be with us next season.”

Brown on transfer activity:

“We’re still looking around and working as hard as possible behind the scenes to bring the type of players we want to this football club but it’s hard work. I’m pleased with who we have been able to bring in already but we are possible four or five short of where we need to be come the start of the season. It would be nice to have as many signed as possible ahead of the trip to Madrid but it could be the last few days before the start of the season or even after that. It’s better now than it was because everyone is back in pre-season and we’re finding out who is surplus to requirements at their clubs and then we go from there.”

Brown on Blues’ pre-season trip to Madrid:

“I’m delighted that we’ve been able to arrange this pre-season trip. Six weeks training in the same place can get extremely boring for the players. We’ve tried to mix it up a bit by going to the beach for runs and so on, but what a fantastic opportunity it is to go to Spain and take on the C team of one of the greatest football clubs in the world. I know they played them last year and got a lot out of the experience so we’ll be going there to do the same. It’s not going to be easy for the players, they’ll have to work hard, but if they, we’ll get the rewards in the QPR game and against Plymouth on the first day of the season.”
