A friendly Straker won't forget

16 July 2013

Anthony Straker delighted to get on the scoresheet at Chelmsford

Most people will forget about a friendly result very quickly.

That certainly won’t be the case for Blues’ Anthony Straker however after the midfielder scored his first goal in a Southend United shirt against Chelmsford on Monday night.

Add to that the fact it was a terrific strike from the edge of the box and it’s clear to see why Strakes was pleased after the game.

He said: “It was nice to see it go in. I didn’t think it was going to if I’m honest but it was great to see it hit the back of the net.

“Obviously it’s only a friendly but it’s always nice to get on the scoresheet, especially as that’s my first one for Southend.

“I went close a couple of times last year and had one disallowed at Fleetwood that I didn’t think should have been.

“Hopefully I can score a few goals this season, especially as I’m now pushing on a bit more to left midfield.”

Anthony has played on the left hand side of midfield in all four of Blues’ games so far this pre-season, with new signing Ben Coker coming in at left-back; a position Straker and Chris Barker fought for last season.

The move to midfield seems to have spurred Anthony on, and he’s determined to kick on this season. He has also been pleased with the partnership he and Coker have formed on the left.

Strakes added: “I’ve enjoyed playing in midfield this pre-season. I played there a bit last year but I was swapping positions quite a lot and that can sometimes make it difficult.

“Hopefully this new position will mean I can try and get a few more goals and assists for the team this season.

“Last season was a bit up and down for me but hopefully this year I can kick-on and really help the team push for promotion.

“Ben is a very good signing for the Club and we’ve linked up well so far I think.

“It’s only been four games that we’ve played together so there’s hopefully more to come from the pair of us.”
