Southend United 2-2 Brentford

Southend United held League One Brentford to a 2-2 draw at Roots Hall in the FA Cup third round this afternoon to set up a replay at Griffin Park.

Blues recovered from two goals down to secure a replay at Griffin Park after Tom Adeyemi and a Ryan Cresswell own goal gave the Bees a two goal advantage.

Barry Corr’s header just before half time gave Southend a lifeline before the striker got his second of game in the 53rd minute with a well placed header.

Both teams started brightly with Brentford nearly taking the lead after Lee Hodson’s right wing cross was headed into his own net just by Southend’s Mark Phillips under pressure 
from Clayton Donaldson in the fifth minute.

Blues responded with a speculative volley from Marc Laird from 25 yards which flew over the bar before Gavin Tomlin’s low drive was saved comfortably by Simon Moore in the 
Bees’ goal.

Southend continued to create chances and in particular Tomlin with the inform striker seeing his left footed effort narrowly missing the top corner from the edge of the area after 
being teed up by Laird.

The forward was at it again in the 23rd minute, curling his strike wide of the target after being picked out excellently by Alex Woodyard.

The away side took the lead in the 29th minute with a cleverly worked move which was finished off calmly by Adeyemi from 12 yards.

Brentford strung together a number of passes on the edge of the box before Paul Hayes superbly slotted the ball into Adeyemi who made no mistake of the finish slotting the 
ball into the bottom left hand corner past Paul Smith.

Blues had an excellent chance in the 36th minute to draw level with Kevan Hurst’s pinpoint delivery finding Barry Corr unmarked only to see his header saved by Moore.

The game became stretched and Brentford doubled their lead in the 38th minute through a Ryan Cresswell own goal as the defender inadvertently headed in Sam Saunders’ 
cross on the right after the midfielder cut the ball onto his left foot and delivered a dangerous cross to the front post.

Southend narrowed the deficit a minute later through Corr’s header at the back post with the striker causing problems in the air for the Bees defence.

Sean Clohessy’s deep cross found the target man unmarked at the back post who headed the ball home off the underside of the bar keeping Southend in the tie at the break.

Blues came out firing in the second half and equalised in the 53rd minute through Corr’s second goal of the game.

Hurst once again delivered an excellent free kick into the box and with Brentford pushing up attempting to catch Blues offside; Corr was free to head the ball into the corner of 
the goal past the helpless Moore as the away side’s attempts failed.

Donaldson tried his luck from distance with a stinging drive which Smith was equal to as both teams struggled to find the breakthrough with very few clear cut chances being 

Southend nearly secured their path into the fourth round of the FA cup with Tomlin’s close range header somehow saved by Moore who superbly tipped the ball over the bar with 
an excellent reaction save.

Neither team were able to find the winning goal with the tie to be settled in a FA Cup third round replay at Griffin Park.
