Spillane happy to get off to winning start in a Blues shirt
Blues debutant Mickey Spillane was delighted to get off to a winning start at the weekend as he made it two wins from two visits to Chesterfield’s Proact Stadium.
Spillane joined Blues on January 17th but had to wait until Saturday to make his debut following the postponement of our game at home to Plymouth Argyle.
And the midfielder enjoyed a debut victory as Gavin Tomlin’s goal in the 83rd minute sealed a hard-fought 1-0 victory.
Having already beaten Chesterfield this season – in a 2-1 win with Dagenham – Mickey was delighted to have done the double.
He said: “It’s great to have got off to a winning start because we always knew this would be a tough game. I came here with Dagenham and won 2-1 and now we’ve won 1-0 today so it’s a bit of a happy stomping ground for me it seems.
“It was great to finally get out there and make my debut. We had to work very hard. Before the game, we wanted to win but would have been happy with a point so we’re delighted to have come away with all three points considering how the game went.
“We had to defend very well and my job really was to just try and break up the play and help the back four. It’s good to have kept a clean sheet and to have got back to winning ways in the league – it was an important three points.”
Mickey is now hoping Blues can take that positive mentality from the win into Saturday’s game against Oxford – where he is looking forward to making his home debut.
“Yeah, I’m looking forward to playing at Roots Hall,” he added. “It’s going to be another difficult game against a good side but I’m confident we can pick up a second win in a row.
“The win here at Chesterfield was important as we needed to get that win after a little bit of a tough spell. The lads are all delighted with the win and hopefully now we can carry that through to Saturday.”
