Striker hopes to play a part against Oxford on Saturday
Britt Assombalonga’s back in training. And he’s hoping he can get back to full fitness as quickly as possible and help Blues push for promotion.
The striker picked up a knock to his ankle against Dagenham & Redbridge on Boxing Day, which has meant he has been out of action for a month.
It has coincided with a dip in form for Blues, but after the win against Chesterfield on Saturday, Britt says he may have to bide his time and get back to full fitness before he’s back in the starting XI.
He said: “The injury has taken a while to heal, it was bruising of the ankle, something I’ve done before and spent three months out with.
“It’s been a long time and a frustrating one but I’m now gradually working my way back to full fitness. I’m raring to go and hopefully I can play a part on Saturday because I’ve really missed playing football and being out on the pitch.
“The win on Saturday was great and the lads have been buzzing this week because of that. It’s difficult seeing the team not winning and they’ve been unlucky in a few of the matches.
“That might mean that the manager doesn’t want to change it and I don’t blame him at all. I’m just going to keep working hard this week in training as it’s my first week back, and hopefully I can play a part on Saturday.”
Despite the poor run of form, Britt says he hasn’t noticed a change in atmosphere behind the scenes and believes the team still have eyes on one thing – automatic promotion.
“I’ve been back with Watford getting myself fit and working on my injury,” he added. “So I’ve not been in and around the lads for a few weeks.
“But coming in on Monday the atmosphere is still the same as when I first joined the Club and before I got injured which says a lot about the team spirit here.
“We’re all confident that we can now push on and go for automatic promotion. We believe as a squad we’re good enough to achieve that so now it’s all about doing it.”
Blues boss Paul Sturrock said that he will wait until Saturday morning to make a decision on Britt, Marc Laird and new loan signing Caolan Lavery.
An interview with Britt will be available on Blues Player.
