Blues sign Michael Spillane

17 January 2013

Midfielder is Blues' second signing of the January transfer window

The Club are delighted to announce the permanent signing of Michael Spillane, our second signing of the January transfer window.

Following the permanent capture of Marc Laid at the beginning of the month, Spillane, 23, joins from Dagenham & Redbridge for an undisclosed fee.

Michael initially joins the Club until the end of the season, with the option of a further year in the summer.

Michael began his career with Norwich City and made his debut in the Championship during the 2005-06 season. He made 34 appearances in total for the Canaries.

He spent time on loan at Luton Town in League 2 during the 2008-09 season where he made 48 appearances.

In 2010, Michael joined League 1 side Brentford for an undisclosed fee. He made 31 appearances for the Bees before moving on loan to Dagenham in November 2011.

His deal was made permanent on January 6th and he went on to make 52 appearances for the Club.

Blues boss Paul Sturrock was delighted to have completed the signing of the midfielder. He said: “We’re very pleased to have been able to complete the signing of Michael.

“He’s still a young player and is exactly the type of player I’ve been looking for during the window. He’s a hardworking midfielder who will hopefully enjoy huge success here with us.

“There were other clubs interested in taking Michael, but we’re thrilled that he’s decided to come here to play his football.

“There’s a lot of Michael’s game that I really like and there’s a few bits we can hopefully improve to help him develop over time.”

Speaking minutes after joining, Michael said: “I’m delighted to have joined Southend United and I can’t wait to get started really.

“Dagenham have played against them three times this season so I’ve seen Southend a few times and they are one of the best teams I’ve seen this season.

“Paul Sturrock spoke to me and outlined what he wants from me and the ambitions of the Club and they match mine so it was the perfect fit.

“I’m really looking forward to meeting the lads, a few of whom I already know, and getting stuck into training and matches.”
