Sturrock: Sloppy goals cost us badly

12 February 2013

Blues boss disappointed with manner of goals conceded in defeat to Cheltenham

Paul Sturrock was disappointed with the two goals his side conceded as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat at home to Cheltenham Town.

Blues gave away an early penalty which Marlon Pack converted before a defensive mix-up allowed Paul Benson to double the visitors’ lead, and Paul says that cost his side dearly.

“Both goals were very sloppy and we could have done so much to have prevented them,” he said. “The first one, Alex is a young lad and he just catches the player and a penalty is given.

“Mickey should know better with the second, he tried to be a footballer and not a defender – he should have just put it into touch and we could have defended it from there.

“That all came after we had an excellent chance in the first minute to take the lead. We weren’t good enough in the first-half it’s as simple as that.”

Paul admitted he maybe got his selection wrong for the game saying: “I hold my hands up and take some of the blame because I possibly got it wrong with my team selection tonight.

“We have got injuries but I think I possibly should have played a different starting line-up in hindsight.

“We never got going, but in the second-half we were much, much better and we had chances. We should have scored in the first minute, the lad was too honest and possibly should have gone down.”

Paul is also going to have to deal with another injury blow for Blues after midfielder Marc Laird limped off during the first-half with a recurrence of his hamstring injury.

Sturrock added: “It just seems that’s the way things are going for us at the moment, it’s a big blow to lose him because he’ll miss a few games.

“We’re suffering from a number of injuries but now is the time when we’ve got to pull together and put in a good performance.

“Tonight things just didn’t fall for us and that’s the way it goes sometimes. I thought we should have had a penalty and it wasn’t given, but balls were just falling the wrong side of us all evening.

“It’s important we work hard before Saturday, put in a performance on the day and get a win under our belts. It’s a big week for us in terms of our season as a whole.”
