Sturrock perplexed by Blues display

Paul Sturrock 'exasperated' as Blues draw 1-1 at Accrington

Paul Sturrock says he was left ‘exasperated’ after watching ten-man Blues rescue a point away at Accrington Stanley.

After the high of Tuesday night’s win against Leyton Orient, Paul was disappointed with the level of tempo shown by his side at the Crown Ground.

Blues only seemed to respond once Ryan Cresswell had been sent off for an off-the-ball incident, leaving Paul to ponder why his side had only started to play following the red.

Speaking after the game, Paul said: “I’m exasperated because I just can’t work out why we didn’t start the game in the right way. The first-half was fairly even.

“But if you’re going to win football matches you cannot play at the tempo we did today for about 65 minutes.

“We only seemed to up our game once we were down to ten men and I just can’t work out why that is.

“There were some changes made to the team but that shouldn’t have had any real effect on the team.

“At the start of the second half we were abysmal, they were on top and we just couldn’t get going.

“Once Ryan had been sent off everyone had a spring in their step and we started to get forward, Marc Laird was running up and down the pitch and we looked better.

“It was a good goal from Kevan and having been down to ten men and a goal down, we are pleased to be coming away with a point.”

Sturrock didn’t have any complaints about Ryan’s red card, but felt similar action should have been taken against James Gray for an elbow.

He added: “Ryan has reacted, grabbed him and pushed him to the floor so we can’t really moan about the decision. He’s gutted in the dressing room and will miss some big games now.

“I felt their player should have received some punishment for the elbow because that’s why Ryan reacted.”

Paul also said he opted for Luke Prosser as captain today because he has shown during his time with the Club that he is very vocal.

“I gave the armband to Luke because he’s shown during his time with us that he is loud on and off the pitch,” he said.

“He did well today coming back in to the side. With the injuries and suspension to Ryan, the back four could well be similar again on Tuesday to the one that finished here at Accrington.”
