Ben Reeves hopes he can play an important role during his 28-day loan
Ben Reeves is hoping he can play a pivotal role in helping Blues earn promotion after joining from Premier League Southampton on a 28-day loan.
Reeves’ loan will cover eight matches for Blues, including six League 2 matches and two games in the Johnstone’s Paint. And the 21-year-old is hoping he can chip in with some assists and goals during his time here at Roots Hall.
Ben, who will wear the number 27 shirt during his time here, spoke exclusively to Blues Player about the loan move, what he hopes to achieve with us, and how he is ready for the challenge of League 2 having experienced it last season with Dagenham & Redbridge.
He said: “I found out a couple of days before the move from the Director of Football at Southampton and he said it was a good opportunity. I had a think about it and after speaking to the manager here, I was very keen to come and do my best for Southend.
“Hopefully I can help the push for promotion. I think there’s eight games to be played during my initial loan so it’s going to be a pivotal time of the season.
“I have played a couple of times at left-back but I can play in midfield and just behind the striker. I like to create chances for other people, get some shots and crosses in and generally play in between the lines of the opposition.
“There is of course the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy too while I am here and I know a couple of the lads at Leyton Orient so I’m really looking forward to that.
“I know what to expect from League 2 because I enjoyed a short spell at Dagenham. It’s different to what I have been playing in the under-21 league for Southampton but I’m confident I can adapt and hopefully play a big part during my time here.
“I met all the lads for the first time on Friday. I knew Mickey Spillane from when I went to Dagenham so it’s been a bit manic since I joined getting to know everyone but I’m really looking forward to the game on Saturday.
