Kevan Hurst praises his teammates for helping bag his eighth goal of the season in draw with Rochdale
Kevan Hurst was pleased to see his goal earn Southend United a deserved point at home to Rochdale on Friday night.
Hurst made it eight goals for the season with a fine strike just before half-time after Jamie Allen had given the visitors the lead.
The midfielder felt it was a decent point gained against a Rochdale side who should be up there come the end of the season.
He said: “Rochdale are a good team and they came here with a different formation to try and make it difficult for us.
“We didn’t start the game very well and they got on top and managed to get a goal in front.
“We have responded really well to going a goal behind on so many occasions this season and this game was no different.
“Once Michael Timlin pushed slightly further forward onto the defender who was moving into midfield we started to see more of the ball.
“I was delighted with the goal but a lot of credit has to go to Barry Corr for the flick on and Michael Timlin for the pass into me.
“I’ve said all along I want to get more goals this season and I’m doing that. I just want to keep it going.
“I felt a point was a fair reflection of the game. Both sides had chances to win it but we were up against one of the best teams in the division so we’re pleased to have got something from the game.”
Hurst praised both Corr and Timlin for their efforts during the game, as well as John White, who Hurst says has allowed him to advance further forward.
“Barry Corr does such a good job for the team leading the line and allows Anthony Straker and I to get on the ball,” Hurst said.
“He just needed that little bit of luck tonight to get a goal but we’re all positive he’ll be scoring more as the season goes on.
“Timlin worked extremely hard tonight and was always in the opposition’s faces, he had a really good game.
“John White and Will Atkinson have played a big part in helping me get more goals this season.
“John gives me the freedom to get forward more and try and get on the scoresheet and Will is brilliant at coming across to cover if I’m out of position.
“It has been a real team effort all season and we want to keep that going into the New Year.”
