Straker: The ideal way to start

4 August 2013

Midfielder says the opening day win will help Blues settle down ahead of a long season

Anthony Straker says Blues will take it game by game as they look to build on the promising start they made on Saturday against Plymouth Argyle at Roots Hall.

Straker was again played on the left-hand side of midfield and produced an excellent individual display that matched that of the whole team.

Strakes believes that opening day win will settle the nerves of players and fans, just like the early goal did against Plymouth on Saturday.

He said: “I think the early goal definitely settled us against Plymouth, not just the players but the fans as well.

“They were really behind us today and that’s all we can ask for. We want to win games to send them home happy so we’re delighted to have done that.

“The win should settle us down now. Before the game there might have been a few nerves not knowing what to expect but the three points will help.

“We’ve got to take it step-by-step and one game at a time but any nerves that were there will have gone now and we can focus on the games ahead.

“It’s a long hard season but that’s one ticked off.”

Straker has shone on the left hand side of midfield and formed an impressive partnership with new signing Ben Coker.

The 24-year-old is pleased with how the partnership is progressing and also believes there is now good competition for places following the signing of three players last week.

He added: “I’m really enjoying playing there and I’m working well with Ben Coker. We’ve formed a good partnership and it will only improve.

“I just want to make sure I stay injury free and get as many games under my belt as possible this season.

“The manager has shown confidence in me and given the chance to go and show everyone what I can do. I’m taking it as the games come and we’ll see how it goes.

“Obviously the three new lads will want to be starting but we’re a squad here and there’s some really good competition for places now.”
