Brown delighted with winning start

Manager's reaction to Blues' 1-0 win against Plymouth Argyle

Phil Brown was delighted to get the season off to a winning start as Blues beat Plymouth Argyle 1-0 at Roots Hall on Saturday.

Brown was pleased with the performance of his side and says they can now look forward to the upcoming campaign after getting off the mark.

He said: “The performance was worthy of the three points and we can now focus on addressing the challenge ahead which is 45 games, or possibly more.

“It was good to keep a clean sheet and of course Barry Corr scored which means both the defence and the attack did their jobs today.

“I think we put a marker down and the punters were able to see a very hardworking side. I’d like to see us play a bit more football but I was pleased with what I saw out there today.

“Barry Corr is a big lad up top but I don’t want to be pinging the ball into his head all the time because he can play on the floor and has an excellent touch. If we can do that then we can get the likes of Freddy Eastwood and Craig Reid more involved.

“I’m pleased for young Daniel Bentley to keep another clean sheet, he did very well again today. We asked Luke Prosser and Mark Phillips to dominate their forwards and they did that today, we deserved the three points and the clean sheet.”

Focus now turns immediately to Yeovil Town on Tuesday night in the Capital One Cup and Brown says his three new signings could feature from the start.

He also hopes the fans will create a similar atmosphere to the one they created on Saturday against Plymouth Argyle.

He said: “I think the fans and the players can work off each other. We worked really hard today and put our bodies on the line and the fans clearly appreciated that.

“When there’s 6,000 home fans at Roots Hall there’s a real atmosphere about the place and that was certainly the case today, it’d be great if we can carry that into Tuesday night.

“I’m already thinking about the team for Yeovil. I’m already deciding which team I put out there. We’ve got a small squad but good levels of fitness.

“The three new lads are a little bit behind but the could all be involved from the start against Yeovil.

“I won’t make any changes that aren’t necessary as I want to progress in the competition but we’ve just got to manage the squad.”

Phil's full interview will be on our official YouTube channel on Saturday evening.
