20-year-old defender has joined Blues until January 4th.
Southend United are pleased to announce that defender Adam Thompson has joined on loan from Championship club Watford until January 4th 2014.
Thompson played for Blues in the 1-0 win against a West Ham XI and has now linked up with the squad following Chris Barker’s departure and the injury to Julian Bennett.
The 20-year-old featured ten times for Watford during the 2010/11 season before being loaned to Brentford for most of the 2011/12 season.
He scored on his debut for the Bees in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy against MK Dons and went on to make 22 appearances in all competitions with the League 1 side.
Thompson played for Watford in their 2-1 defeat to Bradford City before being loaned to Wycombe Wanderers.
His first game for Wycombe was a 1-0 defeat to Blues at Roots Hall. The defender made just one further appearance before returning to Watford.
In total he made five appearances for Watford last season, and also featured once on loan for Barnet.
Adam has featured for Northern Ireland’s under-17’s, under-19’s and under-21’s as well as making two appearances for the senior side.
The defender will be linking up with Northern Ireland’s under-21’s on Monday for their game against Denmark on Wednesday.
Having impressed in the win against West Ham, Thompson has now linked up with Blues until January.
Phil Brown said: “With the injury to Julian Bennett and the departure of Chris Barker, there was a space in defence to bring someone in.
“Adam has played a number of games for Watford already, and spent time out on loan at the likes of Brentford so he comes here with some experience.
“He was impressive in the friendly against West Ham and I’m delighted he’s been able to join us.”
Adam will be available for selection for Saturday’s game against Hartlepool United and will wear the number 23 shirt.
