Tale of two free kicks in friendly draw

2 April 2013

Southend United 1-1 Dagenham & Redbridge

Barry Corr once again got the equaliser as Blues’ behind closed doors friendly against Dagenham and Redbridge ended in a draw.

Corr, who scored in Blues’ nPower League 2 game against Fleetwood just 24 hours before, scored a quickly taken free kick against the Daggers as the game finished 1-1.

It was a chance for Graham Coughlan to give playing time to some who missed out or played parts of Monday’s game.

Ryan Leonard played at right back with Marc Laird and Mickey Spillane in central midfield, with Corr taking his place up front.

Dagenham took the lead inside eight minutes as Matt Saunders curled in a free kick from 25 yards that flew past goalkeeper, Daniel Bentley.

Blues did have the ball in the net just two minutes later when Corr tapped in after Spillane’s left footed drive was deflected. However, the offside flag was raised.

On 21 minutes, Spillane’s curled effort sailed just over the crossbar after good work by Leonard down the right hand side.

Nine minutes later and the hosts tried their luck again; this time, Mitchell Pinnock’s powerful strike was just off target.

Soon after, Blues had another effort. A Pinnock cross found Corr, his header go inches wide of the right hand post.

After 41 minutes, Pinnock’s floated corner found Matt Lund lurking on the edge of the box, Lund’s drilled strike cannoned off Louis Baucutt and just wide.

On the stroke of half time, Spillane’s dipping drive was palmed away by the Dagenham ‘keeper.

Coughlan made changes at the interval as Lund, Leonard, Laird and Spillane made way.

Six minutes after half time and the score was level. With the Daggers’ ‘keeper setting up the wall, Corr’s quick thinking saw the Ulsterman pass the ball into the net from the free kick.

That was the last action for the big striker as he was substituted minutes later.

Both teams had opportunities to win the game, with the best chance falling to Seedy Njie, his header straight at the goalkeeper with just four minutes remaining.
