REPORT: Blues beaten by Shrimps
Southend United’s season ended with a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Morecambe at Roots Hall on Saturday.
Despite hopes of a play-off place out of their reach, Blues started the game on top and had four good chances to take the lead in the opening 20 minutes.
First, Ryan Cresswell saw his header from Freddy Eastwood’s free-kick deflected just over the crossbar before Gavin Tomlin was unable to get enough conviction on the ball from Barry Corr’s cutback to tap home.
Tomlin then went close again moments later but saw his curling effort well saved by Barry Roche before Corr fired over from 12-yards out after good work from Kevan Hurst.
Against the run of play though, Blues went behind. Sean Clohessy tried to shield the ball out of play but was dispossessed by Fleming who kept his composure to squeeze the ball past Paul Smith from a tight angle.
Blues continued to dominate for the remainder of the first-half, but it was much more even after the break.
Corr was unlucky not to find the back of the net after meeting substitute Mitch Pinnock’s delivery.
Minutes later and Smith had to push away Chris Holroyd’s low drive as the visitors went in search of a second.
Pinnock, who was making his home debut, then played in Ryan Leonard who turned well and saw his cross almost turned into is own net by Robbie Threlfall.
Brown also introduced Seedy Njie with six minutes of normal time remaining but the youngster was unable to help muster Blues an equaliser to end the season on a disappointing note.
