Blues boss happy though to have kept clean sheet against Bristol Rovers
Blues boss Phil Brown was left to rue missed opportunities as his side were held to a goalless draw by Bristol Rovers at Roots Hall.
Britt Assombalonga, Barry Corr and Freddy Eastwood all went close in the second-half but Blues were unable to find a way past former goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall and had to settle for a point.
Brown though was delighted to see his side keep a clean sheet for the first time since he took over, and he hopes Blues can build on that in the remaining three games of the season.
He said: “I thought we deserved to win the game comfortably. You can bemoan your luck but we asked a lot of questions of the opposition today.
“John Ward said to me afterwards that his side had got away with that one. He’s an experienced man and in the last 30 minutes he tightened up by bringing on an extra midfielder in the hope of getting a point.
“But we defended really well today, and I was delighted with the clean sheet. When it’s 0-0 in the last ten minutes or so anything can happen but we stood up to the challenge well and kept them at bay.
“I’m Southend United manager and when we score I’m going to celebrate, when we win I’m going to celebrate and when we keep clean sheets and defend in the manner we did I’m going to celebrate because it’s just as important.”
Blues lined up in a 4-3-3 formation and Brown admits they only worked on it in training yesterday but was pleased with it and believes it gives them something to work on over the next three games.
He added: “We worked on the formation very briefly on Friday because we’ve hardly had any time with the amount of games we’ve had.
“I’m not going to take any credit for the way the strikers played today because all three are very different and are playing in positions they enjoy playing in.
“They are all different in the fact one likes to hold the ball up, one likes to use his pace and the other likes to use his guile and nous to get something from the game.
“The quality was there, we put some real quality into the box but it was just the finishing that alluded us today.”
