Southend United Under-18’s recorded a 5-1 win against Bournemouth on Saturday at Boots and Laces.
Braces from Jack Payne and Jason Williams, along with a wonder-strike from Mitchell Pinnock, handed Ricky Duncan’s side their second successive win.
Much to the delight of the Southend Head of Youth.
“I said last week that I thought this side had goals in it, and we’ve proved that to be the case again this weekend,” said Duncan after seeing his side score nine goals in their last two matches.
“Once we got a goal ahead, we were always quite comfortable and we finished our chances clinically as the game went on.”
Southend took the lead just before the half hour mark when Mitchell Pinnock collected Jack Edwards pass before smashing a thunderous shot into the bottom right-hand corner to put the home side 1-0 up.
Two minutes later the right-hand post denied Jason Williams before Callum Buckley was soon thwarted at the opposite end for the visitors when he drilled a long-range shot against the woodwork.
Despite the scare Duncan’s side doubled their lead nine minutes before half-time when Fope Coker’s quickly taken set-piece set Payne away to slide the ball inside the right-hand post.
The goal resulted in Cherries coach Ross Embleton being sent off for his protest before Southend added a third after half-time.
First year scholar Williams latched on to the ball from close range when the goalkeeper dropped the ball at his feet to stab home with a typical poachers finish.
Blues were momentarily pegged back four minutes later when a Bournemouth central defender rose unmarked at the back post to nod home Sam Kirkwood’s corner.
But in the 66th minute Williams grabbed his second, and Blues fourth, when he reacted quickest after Payne’s header came back off the post.
Ted Smith made a smart block from Goodship with twelve minutes remaining, but Blues wrapped up the win in stoppage time when sub Dan King freed Payne fifteen yards out who finished in the bottom right-hand corner.
Southend: Smith, Jeffery, Hyams, Coker (Bridge 59), Banton, Tatham, Agyakwa, Edwards, Williams (Barlow 73 (King 81)), Payne, Pinnock.
