Smith suffers concussion & neck injury

19 September 2012

A scan last night revealed that goalkeeper Paul Smith had suffered concussion and a neck injury after Southend United’s 1-0 defeat at Gillingham.

The Blues stopper collided with Gills Deon Burton in the 10th minute of the match at the Priestfield Stadium.

That resulted in play being held up for nine minutes whilst he received treatment with the 32-year-old out cold at one point.

He eventually regained consciousness, prior to being taken to hospital for a check-up that revealed no serious damage.

However, as a result of his injuries the Blues keeper is now a doubt for Saturday’s home match with Exeter City.

Meanwhile, centre-back Mark Phillips suffered an impact injury following a tackle by Gillingham’s Bradley Dack that saw the midfielder sent off.

Phillips was substituted with Anthony Straker at half-time with the groin problem and is another who is unlikely to feature this weekend.
