The club today announced the appointment of Steve Kavanagh as Chief Executive replacing Gary Lockett who stepped down to a non-executive position last week.
Kavanagh said: “I am delighted to be joining Southend United and looking forward to being part of what is a really exciting period for the club as the new stadium development grows ever closer.
“I have worked in football for over ten years and fully understand the 24/7 culture that is required to deliver success both on and off the field.”
Steve is a Chartered Accountant who started his football career as Finance Director of Charlton Athletic, later becoming Chief Executive.
Kavanagh added: “I have known Ron Martin for a number of years and I have seen first hand his passion and desire to deliver success for the club and I am looking forward to working along side Ron, and the rest of the board, to deliver what is a really exciting future.
“Part of this vision has to deliver success on the pitch and I will be working with Paul Sturrock to build on the feel good factor that exists in the squad, I was at the match last night and it ended disappointingly, but the spirit in the team having gone down to ten men so early on, and the desire to go and win the game, was evident.
“However, to deliver the vision I am very clear that the club must continue to engage positively with the supporters and the community at large and where possible expand such activity as the future becomes clearer. We all have a part to play in bringing the success that everyone wants for this club.
“Earlier in the week Chairman Ron Martin spoke of the need to gear up the management behind the scenes as the lines of sight, for the new stadium, grow ever closer and this is part of this jigsaw.”
Speaking about Steve’s appointment Chairman Ron Martin commented: “I am passionate about delivering the future vision for the club and I see Steve’s appointment as very important in helping in the delivery of a bright future for Southend United.”
