Southend 0 York 0

Southend United played out a dour 0-0 draw with York City at Roots Hall this afternoon.

Both sides struggled to create clear cut chances.

And there was little to entertain the supporters.

However, after just four minutes, Britt Assombalonga fired straight at York goalkeeper Michael Ingham from a narrow angle after a fine through ball from Kevan Hurst.

York soon hit back with Ashley Chambers scuffing a 12 yard shot in to the gloves of Southend goalkeeper Paul Smith after Matty Blair’s pass had sent the striker away from the home-side’s defence.
The remainder of the first half was uneventful but, immediately after the break, Blair’s half volley from the edge of the penalty area was easily saved by Smith.

With York remaining on top they then wasted a great chance to score in the 54th minute when Blair’s right wing cross picked out Jason Walker but the striker could only head wide of the left post from eight yards.

Two minutes later, the Minstermen again almost went in front when Blair raced clean through on goal but the winger was unable to find a way past Smith who did well to deny the winger with a fine double save.

After that, the game returned to being short of excitement and, in a bid to liven up proceedings, Blues made their first substitution of the game in the 75th minute as Barry Corr came on for Eastwood up front.

After the Irishman’s introduction, Southend twice came close to scoring in quick succession.

First, Chris Barker heading over from six yards after Kevan Hurst’s free kick had been flicked on by Britt Assombalonga and, with 86 minutes on the clock, Hurst poorly sent a half volley off target from close range after Sean Clohessy’s right wing cross had been partially cleared in to his path as the game ended goalless.
