Barker calls for home improvements

25 October 2012

Captain Chris Barker has called on his teammates to improve his sides’ form at Roots Hall.

Southend United have suffered defeats to Burton and Aldershot along with a draw to bottom placed Barnet in recent weeks all on home soil.

And Barker has highlighted improvement at home as the number one priority for the Blues squad.

“At home we seem to have a little problem in terms of results but we need to sort it out,” he told the official website.

“We drop too many points at Roots Hall, especially against the lower placed teams.

“That needs to chance very quickly because if you want to get promoted you have to do well at home.”

United’s latest defeat at Roots Hall came on Tuesday night when Southend suffered a 2-1 defeat against Aldershot Town.

In an abject display Barker admitted that it was the first time in his career he had seen nearly every player fail to perform.

“We need to turn things around very quickly,” he said. “We are all disappointed with Tuesday night, especially the first half.

“That was one of those things that I haven’t really seen before. You sometimes get two or three players that don’t perform on the night but to get probably ten players to not do it on the night is incredible.

“It is a fresh start on Saturday though and hopefully we can get three points and prove to the fans it was a one off.

“We aren’t hiding from anything though as the first half wasn’t good enough and we have to improve.”

Saturday’s match against York City is Kids for a Quid for all supporters under the age of 16.

Along with the match there is also plenty of activities planned for the Family Bonanza Day, including performances from local up and coming group Us and Her whilst the UK’s Justin Bieber tribute act will also be performing.

We will be handing out 1,000 free goody bags to the first children through the gate on the day of the game and a mascot race will take place at half-time.

The fun starts from 2pm and fans can purchase tickets from the Blues Box Office by calling 08444 770077 or by buying online.
