Southend United boss Paul Sturrock is aiming to give all of his squad 45 minutes in his opening pre-season friendly with West Ham United on Saturday. The match is United’s first of pre-season and Sturrock does not want anyone to play more than half a match against the Premier League side.
“It’s still early days for us in terms of pre-season and somehow I will make sure we don’t have players out there for more than a half,” said Sturrock.
“It will be tricky because we have a few players injured but West Ham are obviously a very strong side having just got promoted to the Premier League and it will be a tough first game back for us.”
Four of Sturrock’s squad will not be involved as they are not yet fit enough to take part after carrying knocks from last season.
Mark Phillips (shoulder), Barry Corr (knee), Michael Timlin (shoulder) and Freddy Eastwood (knee) are not yet fit enough to feature whilst Ryan Hall is a doubt also having missed two days of pre-season through illness.
And Sturrock will also be using the clash to look at a number of trialists.
“This will be a good game to have a look at a few people,” said the Scot.
Meanwhile, West Ham United have confirmed that they will be sending a first team down to Roots Hall for the game.
Defender James Tomkins and midfielder Mohamed Diame will miss out as the pair are set to feature in the Olympics whilst Jack Collison and Joey O’Brien also have slight knee problems and are unlikely to figure.
Tickets are available on the day for the match, which kicks off at 3pm. Priced £10 and £5 for Season Card Holders or £15 and £5 for non Season Card Holders fans can buy from Roots Hall or by calling 08444 77 00 77.
