Anthony Straker admitted it was good to see how far his Southend United side was off Championship quality tonight.
The Blues left-back played 90 minutes in Southend United’s 2-1 pre-season win against Ipswich Town at Roots Hall this evening.
It was Straker’s third game in four days but he admitted the buzz of the weekend tour in Madrid got them through the match.
“It was a good test and I always think it is when you play higher opposition but it was enjoyable as it helps us see where we are,” Straker told the official website after the match.
“The boys came out fighting straight away and I think we are all still buzzing from being away, if we can carry on like this we will do well this season.
“Towards the end of the match it was hard as we have played three games in four days not to mention the travelling but we got through it well.”
Straker, a new arrival from Aldershot Town this summer, has fitted in well in the Blues back four.
And having been made to feel welcome he sees no reason why promotion won’t be on the cards this term.
“Pre-season could not be going better,” said the former Aldershot Town defender.
“I am enjoying it here in a new place and environment everyone has made me feel welcome.
“There will be good competition this year with the teams that have come up and down but I think we will be up there with them.”
