Smith to make Madrid trip

25 July 2012

Goalkeeper Phil Smith is one of three trialists set to travel with the Blues squad on the Club’s pre-season tour of Madrid.

The ex-Swindon Town stopper played in United’s opening friendly against West Ham United earlier this month.

Smith, 32, has worked under Sturrock previously during his tenure as Robins manager and he made 132 appearances during six-years at the County Ground.

And now he will be part of United’s travelling party for their four-day trip to the Spanish capital.

Also joining the keeper on the tour are midfielders Stephen Brogan and John Spicer.

Former Stalybridge Celtic winger Brogan scored two goals in last Saturday’s 2-0 win at Braintree Town and has been training with the squad this week.

Meanwhile, ex-Burnley and Notts County central midfielder John Spicer will also be given another opportunity to impress having featured at Great Wakering Rovers and Braintree Town.

Only Michael Timlin and Barry Corr will not travel with the pair remaining in Essex to receive treatment to injuries.

Timlin is recovering from a shoulder problem whilst Corr has a minor groin strain that has put his return back just a couple of days.

Southend play two matches whilst they are away against Real Madrid C on Saturday and Rayo Vallecano B on Sunday.

Travelling squad: Phil Smith, Daniel Bentley, Sean Clohessy, Chris Barker, Ryan Cresswell, Mark Phillips, Graham Coughlan, Anthony Straker, Luke Prosser, Stephen Brogan, John Spicer, Kane Ferdinand, Kevan Hurst, Ryan Hall, David Martin, Ryan Leonard, Gavin Tomlin, Freddy Eastwood, Neil Harris and Elliot Benyon.
