Rayo Vallecano B 1 Southend 1

29 July 2012

Southend United finished their pre-season tour of Madrid with a 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano B this evening.

Freddy Eastwood’s 17th minute equaliser cancelled out Vallecano’s opener to seal a draw against the Segunda División B outfit.

It was Rayo though who drew first blood after nine minutes when Ruben scored from 20-yards past Phil Smith into the bottom corner.

Blues responded by hitting the bar via a header from Benyon, before Eastwood pulled Southend level two minutes later.

Ryan Hall’s left wing cross was volleyed goalwards by Benyon and Eastwood followed up the rebound to tap in from close range after keeper Bielsa made a good save.

The home side responded with Nesa shooting wide from 12-yards before David Martin headed over at the back post from Hall’s cross.

Trialist keeper Smith then had to be alert to make a smart save from Ruben’s long range effort on 33 minutes before again denying the Vallecano winger 8 minutes later.

After the break manager Paul Sturrock made just one change replacing Smith with Daniel Bentley in goal and he was tested early on when Thiombane tried his luck from way out two minutes after the restart.

Chris Barker found himself in an unfamiliar position as his shot from the edge of the area after a quick free-kick flew inches over the bar before Luke Prosser headed over from a corner on 63 minutes.

United then made several changes in quick succession, with Ryan Cresswell deployed in an unfamiliar striker role and the former Rotherham United player nearly worked his way onto the scoresheet early on when he found the arms of substitute Carlos in the home sides goal.

Fellow substitute Gavin Tomlin then headed at the keeper from eight yards before Cresswell nearly won it for Southend as he too failed to convert with his head from a similar distance.

And although the Blues did manage to get the ball into the net in the 90th minute, Ferdinand finishing off Tomlin’s rebound, it was ruled out for offside as the match ended in a draw.
