Striker Elliot Benyon believes he could be the key to promotion for Southend United this season.Benyon netted a first half equaliser in last nights 3-2 pre-season win at Great Wakering Rovers.
And the former Torquay United frontman is confident of getting further goals this season if given the opportunity.
“I believe I can be the key to Southend this season,” a confident Benyon told the official website.
“I’m confident that I can score goals in this division and I think all I need is a few games to do that.”
Benyon moved to Roots Hall in January of this year for an undisclosed fee from Swindon Town.
He made 9 starts scoring two goals for Paul Sturrock’s side last term and having grabbed his first goal of pre-season at Burroughs Park on Wednesday he admitted he was feeling sharp.
“It was good to get another 45 minutes under my belt,” added the Buckinghamshire born forward.
“We are trying out a new formation at the moment so it is going to take a while for everyone to get use to it but I think the most important thing is match fitness at the moment and not results.
“Everyone is struggling coming into the games but that is what pre-season is all about.
“I’m feeling sharp though, all the boys have come back in good shape and we’ve been put through our paces in the last few days.”
Blues are back in pre-season action on Saturday with a trip to Blue Square Premier side Braintree Town, 3pm kick-off.
