Tomlin: I told Britt I'd catch him up

21 December 2012

Striker makes it 12 for the season with a brace against Chesterfield

Gavin Tomlin says he told Britt Assombalonga he would catch him in the goalscoring charts a while back – and he proved it with his brace against Chesterfield.
But Gavin insists that he’s just happy the team are winning matches, and that strike partner Britt has agreed a deal to stay on loan until the end of the season.
Speaking after his brace, that took him to 12 for the season, Gavin said: “It was great to hear that he was going to be staying with us for longer.
“He works really hard and we seem to have really been able to grow as a partnership up top, none more so than against Chesterfield.
“After the first 45 minutes, the Gaffer said to us we needed to be closer together and in the second half we were.
“Once that falls into place it helps the whole team out and the second half performance was really good from everyone.
“I told Britt a while back that I would catch him and he didn’t believe me – but we’re both just happy for one another when we’re scoring goals and the team is winning.”
Just as Britt said after signing his loan extension, Gavin is determined to help fire Blues to promotion.
“The aim is for promotion and hopefully we can both play a big part in that,” he added. “We don’t want to be in the play-offs, we’re looking for the automatic places.
“When you look at the competition for places at the moment it really helps drive every player on.
“Freddy, Barry and Elliot are all waiting for their chance so we’ve got to make sure we keep scoring and keep putting in the performances.”
