Barker: Let's keep another clean sheet

28 December 2012

Skipper wants to remain solid at the back against Burton Albion

Blues skipper Chris Barker wants to make it a hat-trick of clean sheets on Saturday when Southend take on Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium.

That way, Blues’ unbeaten run will stretch to 15 games in all competitions, in what is set to be a very difficult away test.

Burton sit just outside the play-off places in League 2 and come into the game off the back of a 3-2 win against fellow promotion hopefuls Rochdale.

Speaking ahead of the game, Barker said: “It’s going to be a very difficult game, there’s no doubt about that.

“Burton seem to be a bit of a yo-yo side where they win a couple, lose a couple, but it’s always tough at their place.

“They beat us earlier in the season so we’re determined to get one over on them on Saturday.

“If you keep a clean sheet, you don’t lose the match, it is as simple as that.

“We’ve been pleased defensively to have not conceded in both our previous games so hopefully we can make it three in a row on Saturday.”

The skipper also believes that having so many games in such a short space of time is a good thing for Blues, considering the confidence there is among the camp.

“Confidence is as high as a kite at the moment and so it should be really with the run we’re on,” he added.

“If you can’t take confidence from 14 games unbeaten then you’re never going to be confident.

“All the way through the team at the minute everyone is performing well and we’re picking up the points.

“The Christmas period is always a busy one but we’ve picked up six points from our first two against Chesterfield and Dagenham.

“We’ve got two more tough games coming up starting with Burton Albion and we’re desperate to win it nine points from nine.”
