Southend United finished pre-season with an embarrassing 6-0 defeat to a Tottenham Hotspur XI at Roots Hall on Friday night.
Goals from Souleymane Coulibaly, Andros Townsend, Jonathan Obika and a hattrick from Harry Kane saw Southend succumb to a dreadful result that left boss Paul Sturrock furious at full-time.
Spurs took the lead after 17 minutes when Ivorian forward Souleymane Coulibaly turned in the Southend box to convert Andros Townsend’s left wing cross.
That 1-0 lead would have been doubled five minutes later had it not been for a magnificent save by Daniel Bentley, with Harry Kane’s free-kick looking destined for the top corner.
Luke Prosser then had his header from Ryan Hall’s corner well saved by Tottenham trialist keeper Matthew Ryan before the former Spurs trainee took a shot in the face from Townsend at the other end of the pitch.
A good passing move inside the Southend penalty area then enabled Kane to scramble home Tottenham’s second goal of the night on 37 minutes despite challenges from Hall and Sean Clohessy.
Ryan Leonard squandered a good opportunity to pull a goal back three minutes before half-time when he headed Neil Harris’ flick on over the bar unmarked in the box.
2-0 down at half-time a second half onslaught soon followed as Tottenham’s flowing football enabled them to turn defence into attack leading to four goals for the Premier League outfit.
However, Southend did have the first chance to give themselves a lifeline as Hall found himself unmarked at the back post but shot straight at keeper Ryan on 58 minutes.
Six minutes later and Spurs put the game beyond doubt as a defence splitting pass from Tom Carroll found Kane who lifted the ball over Blues custodian Bentley to score Tottenham’s third and his second of the evening.
From the restart the visitors soon made it 4-0, although there was a touch of fortune about it, Townsend’s shot from 18-yards took a wicked deflection off a Blues defender and past the wrong footed Bentley in the 67th minute.
Freddy Eastwood responded shooting wide from distance for United before Kane completed his hattrick in the 78th minute. This time the former Millwall loanee squeezed an effort under Bentley who had made a couple of strong saves previously to keep the score down.
That just left Jonathan Obika to add a sixth in the 82nd minute as he got the wrong side of defender Mark Phillips to head in from close range to wrap up a disappointed end to Southend’s pre-season against an impressive looking Tottenham reserve team.
