Defender Sean Clohessy insists it is important Southend United get off to a good start against Accrington Stanley on Saturday.
Blues kick-off their npower League Two season at Roots Hall this weekend.
And after a gruelling pre-season right-back Clohessy is looking forward to the big kick-off.
“It is important now that we get a good result on Saturday and start off well,” Clohessy told the official website.
“Pre-season on the whole has gone well. We’ve had some bad results but you kind of expect a few dodgy ones when you play the calibre of teams we have.
“Training has been very hard but I think on the whole we have done alright.”
After missing out on promotion last season the former Gillingham defender has had his eyes set of the top three this since.
Blues were a point short of automatic promotion in May, before eventually losing out in the play-offs.
But with a number of strong sides entering the division this year Clohessy knows it is anyone’s game.
“The top three is what we want to get but the league is stronger this season I think,” he said.
“Anyone can get there with some teams spending a lot of money to try and do so.
“No one was expecting Southend to be there last season and look where we ended up.
“This is a big club and we shouldn’t be in this division.
“The base of the club is a Championship/League One side so the fans expect promotion, probably more so after last season, and rightly so.
“We have to realise there is a big expectation and I feel we can meet that.”
