Southend United started pre-season off with a 4-0 victory against Kings Langley with Sam Dalby, Jon Benton, Dan Mooney and Callum Powell getting on the scoresheet at the Orbital Fasteners Stadium.
The friendly had been arranged as part of the deal that brought Jack Wood to Blues earlier in the year and he led Southend out as captain for the first half which was evenly contested early on in the Hertfordshire sunshine.
Oli Coker fizzed an effort over the crossbar early on before Kings Langley went close through their number 11 who scuffed an effort wide from a good position. Moments later and Langley were in again only for some strong defending from Luke Reeve to fend the home side off.
After the drinks break, Blues began to build some pressure and created a string of half chances with Jack Bridge forcing a good save out of the Langley goalkeeper. Jason Demetriou then dragged an effort wide, while Sam Dalby also went close with a low shot that flew just off target.
Eventually, Southend got their reward for their first half efforts as the returning Wood slid a perfectly timed ball into Dalby who found the back of the net by dinking the ball over the advancing goalkeeper to send Blues in front at the interval.
A different 11 came out for the second half – including four of Southend’s five summer signings – and within 30 seconds of the restart, Blues had doubled their lead with a brilliant, dipping strike from Jon Benton.
It was a superb strike from the youngster, continuing his fine form from last season while on loan at Aveley, and Southend could have gone even further in front a few minutes later when Callum Powell burst down the right and saw his low strike parried wide by the goalkeeper.
Blues goalkeeper Collin Andeng Ndi needed to be alert to stop Langley from getting one back, tipping an effort from distance over the bar, but Southend would stamp home their authority with two goals in six minutes to put themselves 4-0 up.
Dan Mooney made it three for Blues direct from a free-kick which the Langley goalkeeper could do very little to prevent hitting the back of the net. Powell then rounded off the scoring by breaking through down the right and prodding a low effort in.
