MATCH REPORT: BLUES 0-1 BOREHAM WOOD

6 August 2022

Southend United fell to opening day defeat as they were beaten 1-0 by Boreham Wood on Saturday at Roots Hall.

Danny Newton scored what proved to be the winning goal in the 28th minute of the match before Lee Ndlovu and Dion Kelly-Evans were sent off for the visitors later in the second half as the visitors finished with nine men. Despite Blues having chances, they could not find a goal to level the score.

Kevin Maher’s side started on the front foot, but new signing Jake Hyde had to be replaced by successful summer trialist Chris Wreh after 12 minutes, when the loanee from Wrexham suffered an early hamstring injury.

Despite the home side’s early spell of pressure, the deadlock was broken by Newton for the visitors in the 28thminute. Former Southend loanee Zak Brunt played an impressive ball behind the defence for Kelly-Evans to cross for Newton, who fired home from eight yards.

The Wood seemed comfortable in defence and threatened once more in first half added time, as Ndlovu beat Southend captain Nathan Ralph before flashing a cross past the Blues’ goal. Jack Payne collected the ball for the opposition and curled an effort at Steve Arnold, who comfortably held the shot, and the score remained the same until the half time whistle.

Callum Powell replaced Jack Bridge at the break and the forward started brightly, curling a free kick from 25 yards inches wide of the post. Powell went close again just after the hour mark, as he cut inside onto his right foot and unleashed a powerful strike, that was parried smartly by Nathan Ashmore in the Boreham Wood goal.

Southend’s best chance of the game came in the 72nd minute as Shaun Hobson crossed for Wreh, who rose highest to meet the ball, but his header was excellently saved by Ashmore once more.

Moments later, the away side were reduced to ten men, as debutant Ndlovu was shown a second yellow card. The former Brackley man was sent off for catching Blues’ Ollie Kensdale in the air, after being booked in the first half.

Southend almost capitalised upon the red card, as Ashmore made another excellent save. Noor Husin teed up Cav Miley just outside the penalty area, who sent a floating volley goal bound, but the Wood’s goalkeeper clawed it out of the sky with a single hand.

Maher’s Shrimpers came close in the 83rd minute, as Powell found Wreh who did well to work space for himself, but he couldn’t direct his effort on target.

Boreham Wood then made their task of defending their lead much harder as Kelly-Evans was shown a straight red card. The full back produced a rash challenge and was given his marching orders in the 89th minute.

Despite the late substitution of Wesley Fonguck and an intense spell of pressure in the away side’s final third, Southend could not find an equaliser and suffered defeat on matchday one of the campaign.
