Team News

Latest signing Nathan Ralph could be in action in front of Blues’ supporters for the first time after he got minutes in Wednesday’s behind closed doors game against Exeter City.

Luke Hyam was in full training on Friday so he could make his first appearance in pre-season, while Bond is likely to run the rule over some trialists who joined in training on Friday.

Stephen McLaughlin is a doubt after he missed out in Wednesday's game.

Simon Cox and Timothee Dieng stepped up their workload this week but both will definitely not feature on Saturday and are a way off returning at present. Jason Demetriou also remains sidelined.

Dagenham & Redbridge have had a very busy transfer window so far signing a total of 13 players with the latest being centre forward Joe Quigley who joined on a free transfer from Bromley.

Quigley will be looking to add another goal to his pre-season tally after scoring in his first game for the club against Chelmsford City.

Match Report: Dagenham 1-1 Southend

20 July 2019

Brandon Goodship scored his first goal for the Blues as Southend drew their latest pre-season game 1-1 against Dagenham & Redbridge at the Chigwell Construction Stadium.

Both sides struggled to get going in the opening exchanges with Mitch Brundle’s attempted lob and a dragged shot from Charlie Kelman the best either side could muster in the first quarter of an hour.

A couple of further efforts followed for Dagenham before Southend broke the deadlock as Brandon Goodship grabbed his first goal for Blues just shy of the half-hour mark.

A perfectly weighted through ball from skipper Sam Mantom allowed Goodship to round goalkeeper Elliot Justham and slot the ball into the empty net to put Southend in front.

Dagenham though would equalise shortly after when a long ball forward was flicked on into the path of Reece Grant who coolly slid the ball under the advancing Nathan Bishop to level before the break.

After the interval, Peter Taylor’s National League side had the better of the chances with Brundle heading wide from a tight angle before Angelo Balanta headed onto the crossbar from a corner.

Southend though would weather the storm and carved out a couple of chances of their own with Stephen Humphrys firing into the side netting after a delightful ball forward from Elvis Bwomono.

Theo Robinson then should have put Blues back in front when Justham shanked a clearance straight to the feet of the striker but Robinson couldn’t hit the target from 30-yards out, shooting wide.

Some neat football between one of four trialists on show for Blues and Isaac Hutchinson resulted in the youngster drilling a low effort on target but it was easily held by goalkeeper Justham.

Justham was called upon again late on to push wide Humphrys’ free-kick as Southend ended the game strongly but the visitors couldn’t grab a winner as the game finished 1-1.

Blues XI: Bishop, Bwomono, White (Taylor 46’), Lennon (Kiernan 32’), Ralph (Trialist 63’), Milligan (Trialist 46’), Mantom (c) (Yearwood 46’) (Trialist 72’), Hutchinson, Trialist, Goodship (Robinson 46’), Kelman (Humphrys 46’)

Dagenham & Redbridge: Reece Grant 37’

Southend United: Brandon Goodship 29’
