Preview: Weymouth vs Southend United

12 July 2019

Blues head down to Dorset today for the start of a five-day training camp which begins with a friendly against National League South side Weymouth at the Bob Lucas Stadium (7.45pm ko).

The visit to The Terras will be one of two pre-season games Kevin Bond’s side will feature in over the next five days, with a behind-closed-doors game against Exeter City to come next Wednesday.

But tonight will see Southend take on their second National League South opponents of the week having come from behind to dispatch Billericay Town on Tuesday night.

Goals from Stephen Humphrys, Rob Kiernan and trialist, Corey Jordan, were enough to defeat their local opponents who had taken the lead early in the contest through Callum Kennedy.

This evening’s opposition, Weymouth, are going into the season already full of confidence having secured last season’s Southern League title and with it promotion to the National League South.

It’ll be Weymouth’s first return to the sixth tier for nine years and so far they are three for three in pre-season with victories over Hamworthy United, Portland United and Wimborne Town.

But Blues will provide by far their toughest test of pre-season and there'll be a familiar face in the squad as Weymouth’s leading scorer for the last two seasons returns to face his former side.

Brandon Goodship, whose goals helped fire Weymouth to promotion last season, joined Southend earlier in the summer window having scored 76 goals in the last two campaigns for The Terras.

Goodship will be joined in the travelling squad by fellow new signings Mark Milligan and Nathan Ralph, who is set to make his first Blues appearance after signing from Dundee.

Absent though from the travelling party are the likes of Simon Cox and Timothee Dieng who are continuing to recover from calf injuries picked up over the summer and Jason Demetriou and Luke Hyam are working hard at getting themselves back onto the training pitch.

Tickets prices for tonight’s encounter at the Bob Lucas Stadium are £8.00 for adults, £6.00 for concessions, £1.00 for under 16s with a family ticket (2 adults, 2 u16s) available for £16.00.

Match Report: Weymouth 2-2 Southend

12 July 2019

Southend began their five-day training camp in Dorset with a 2-2 draw against National League South side Weymouth with Stephen Humphrys and Isaac Hutchinson scoring for Blues.

Just like Tuesday night against Billericay, Blues went behind early on against their National League South opponents as Weymouth scored after 13 minutes with a well-taken goal from Abdulai Baggie.

Neat passing from the Terras ended with the ball falling to Baggie on the edge of the area who curled a delightful effort beyond Nathan Bishop with the outside of his boot to open the scoring.

Blues levelled a little over 10 minutes later however as Stephen Humphrys scored his second in as many pre-season games, rifling his free-kick beyond Mark Childs from 25-yards to equalise.

Last season’s Southern League champions had a number of great chances to restore their lead with Brett Williams looking like Weymouth’s biggest threat during the first-half.

Williams nicked the ball off Bishop only to miss the open goal from a tight angle, minutes before forcing Bishop into a superb fingertip save with a strike from distance.

Ollie Harfield was next to test Southend’s young goalkeeper with a rasping shot that thundered off his chest before the visitors struck to take the lead just before the interval through Isaac Hutchinson.

Charlie Kelman slid the ball through the Humphrys who skipped past two Weymouth defenders before teeing up Hutchinson to score from close range to put Blues in front.

Before the half was over, however, dangerman Williams was thwarted twice more by Bishop who first saved a low effort from the striker before making an even better save with his legs.

Having already brought on John White after half-an-hour, Southend made a further nine changes before the hour mark with Brandon Goodship coming on to face his former club.

But it would be Weymouth who would go on to grab an equaliser with 15 minutes remaining after a series of corners, with Jake McCarthy squeezing the ball in at the near post to level it at 2-2.

Goodship, who was presented with Weymouth’s Golden Boot pre-match after his 39 goals for the club last season, had a glorious chance late on though to score the winner against his former side.

Dru Yearwood done well to nick the ball from the Terras left-back, sliding the ball across to Goodship who was denied by a brilliant point-blank save from Mark Childs to keep it at 2-2.

Blues XI: Bishop, Howard (Trialist 58’), Taylor (White 32’), Kiernan (C)(Lennon 58’), Clifford (Trialist 58’), Klass (Mantom 58’), Hutchinson (Yearwood 58’), Phillips (Bwomono 58’), Kelman (McLaughlin 58’), Humphrys (Millman 58’), Acquah (Goodship 58’)

Weymouth: Abdulai Baggie 13’, Jake McCarthy 75’

Southend United: Stephen Humphrys 24’, Isaac Hutchinson 41’

Attendance: 620
