Billericay Town vs Southend United...

Blues’ pre-season continues this evening as they travel to The Steel Team Stadium to take on National League South side Billericay Town in their second warm-up game ahead of the new season.

Southend began pre-season with a 2-0 defeat against Championship side Reading in a behind-closed-doors game on Saturday which boss Kevin Bond described as a “good exercise” for his side.

And Blues will look to build their fitness further against a Billericay side that started their pre-season off with a 3-1 win on Sunday in a charity match for the Justin Edinburgh 3 Foundation.

Goals from Jake Robinson, Adam Cunnington and new signing Jordan Parkes was enough for Billericay to beat an All-Star XI which included the likes of Bobby Zamora and Danny Murphy.

Team News

Blues fans will get their first opportunity to see new signings Mark Milligan and Brandon Goodship in action after the two new boys both started Saturday’s behind-closed-doors game against Reading.

A more familiar face to Southend fans that’s likely to feature will be John White who signed a one-year contract extension on Monday and is fit to play this evening.

However, striker Simon Cox and midfielders Luke Hyam and Timothee Dieng will miss out as they continue to nurse injuries picked up in recent weeks.

One of four Billericay new boys this summer, Jordan Parkes, will look to add to the goal he picked up on Sunday as the former Hemel Hempstead striker tries to further impress his new employers.

Fellow new recruits Ben Nunn, Ronnie Henry and Josh Urquhart are all also likely to feature for the non-league side as Harry Wheeler’s team prepares for another crack at the National League South.

Match Report: Billericay 2-3 Southend

9 July 2019

Southend’s preparations for the new season continued as Blues picked up a 3-2 win at Billericay Town with goals from trialist, Rob Kiernan and Stephen Humphrys.

The hosts took the lead inside 10 minutes when a quick corner routine caught Southend napping, allowing Callum Kennedy to ghost into the area and curl the ball beyond an unsighted Mark Oxley.

Billericay then went close to doubling their advantage when Jordan Parkes smacked the top of the crossbar before Jake Robinson curled an effort just wide from the edge of the area.

Kevin Bond’s side levelled midway through the first-half when Corey Jordan, one of three trialists starting for Blues, scored from a tight angle after getting on the end of a Stephen McLaughlin corner.

Southend pressed for a second shortly after equalising and went close when Dru Yearwood was teed up by Theo Robinson only for a superb reaction save from Alan Julian to deny the youngster.

After the break, Yearwood forced another smart save from the Billericay ‘keeper after cutting onto his right and curling a low effort on goal which needed tipping around the post by Julian.

McLaughlin then hit the side netting from a free-kick before Southend made wholesale changes on the hour mark, replacing all 10 outfield players and it immediately brought rewards.

An Isaac Hutchinson corner found the leaping Rob Kiernan in the centre of the penalty area, with the centre-half powering his header beyond Julian to put Southend in front.

Stephen Humphrys then went close to doubling Blues’ lead after being slid through, but Julian spread himself well to save the goalbound effort from the frontman.

But the man whose goal saved Southend from relegation on the final day of last season wasn’t the be denied as seconds later he rifled the ball home from 25-yards with a well-taken effort.

That wasn’t the be the end of the scoring as Billericay nabbed one back with a quarter of an hour to play as Samuel Egole fired the ball across Oxley and into the bottom corner to halve the deficit.

However, it was nothing more than a consolation as the League One side won 3-2 against their National League South opponents ahead of their next friendly on Friday away at Weymouth.
