Southend United has completed the signing of defender Chris Barker on a permanent transfer.

Barker, 30, has signed a two-year contract at Roots Hall from Plymouth Argyle on a free transfer.

And his arrival comes much to the delight of boss Paul Sturrock.

"Chris has done exceptionally well for us so far," Sturrock told southendunited.co.uk.

"He has shown that he is comfortable at left-back or centre-back and I am delighted to have him on board permanently."

Barker will be available for tonight's Johnstone's Paint Trophy first round match with Gillingham at Roots Hall.

The former Colchester United full-back has been on loan from the League One side since the start of the season and has made six appearances this season.
