Southend United manager Paul Sturrock felt a draw would have been a fair result at Aldershot Town this afternoon.
A late strike from Marvin Marshall condemned Blues to a 1-0 defeat against the Shots.
And Sturrock felt that was harsh on his side.
"Anyone watching the game would have said a draw was a fair result," said Sturrock.
"It was a test for us because Aldershot were in the play-offs last season but I don't think we looked out of sorts against them.
"If we can just tidy ourselves up then we can win these type of matches instead of losing but we didn't reach the heights we're capable of.
"I'm not going to make excuses though and it's disappointing not to have taken something from the game."
Marshall's decisive goal angered Blues shot-stopper Glenn Morris who felt he had the ball kicked out of his hands.
But Sturrock will watch the incident again before passinh judgement.
"The goalie is claiming the ball was kicked out of his hands but I don't know what happened," he said.
"I will have to watch it again on television but there were a lot of disappointed people in the dressing room and we need to bounce back against Port Vale on Saturday now."
