FRANCIS RELEASED

Posted on: Thu 08 Jul 2010

Manager Paul Sturrock has today agreed to release defender Simon Francis from his contract at Southend United.

Simon had one-year left on his current agreement at the Football Club.

However, following discussions with new boss Sturrock he has agreed to allow Francis to seek his football elsewhere next season.

"I have spoken with Simon several times over the past couple of days," said Sturrock.

"Simon feels that he needs to be playing his football at a higher level than League Two to develop his game.

"He has been a fantastic servant to the club over the years and enjoyed an excellent season last year.

"Allowing him to go now means we are free to strengthen our squad with players that want to be at Southend United.

"Simon's wages represent a significant percentage of the budget for next season.

"By releasing that we can now look to strengthen the depth of the squad as I outlined in my press conference on Monday."
