18-year-old striker Harry Crawford has today signed his first professional contract at Southend United.

The good news follows the appointment of new Blues boss Paul Sturrock on Monday morning.

And with the new manager now in place Crawford has become the first player to commit his future to the Roots Hall club.

Speaking after putting pen to paper on the two-year deal Crawford told Blues Player: "I'm really proud to commit my future to the Football Club.

"The end of last season was brilliant for me. Getting some playing time for the first team and get my first goal was nice. Hopefully I can now carry on under the new manager."

United's squad returned to training on Monday where Fitness and Conditioning Coach Lawrence Bloom conducted a series of tests.

But today was the first proper training session under the watchful eye of Sturrock.

"It is good to be back," he added. "I'm feeling fit after playing for the Republic of Ireland over the summer.

"Unfortunately we didn't qualify for the under 19 Euro Championships but it was still a good experience.

"I spent two weeks away with the squad and it can only improve my game by playing with players from big clubs like Man United and Arsenal.

"But we've now met the new gaffer and had a chat and he seems good.

"We're all just looking forward to getting down to work now."
