Southend United disappointingly confirmed that Club Captain Adam Barrett is on the transfer list.
This is due to Barrett submitting a written transfer request before the end of the season and his availability has subsequently been circulated to all Clubs.
The Club's Directors and management would love to retain his services however it understands Barrett's desire to play at a higher level at this stage in his career and has reluctantly agreed to allow the player to seek a new Club.
Southend United also confirmed that it will not stand in the way of any of its senior players, several of whom are still on Championship level salaries, who may also want to transfer to an alternative club if appropriate transfer fees can be agreed with any interested parties.
The decision to grant Barrett and other senior players transfer requests has to be balanced against the wage constraints that Southend United and all clubs will operate under in League 2, which is subject to a Football League salary cap.
A Club spokesperson said: "It's disappointing when players such as Adam Barrett submit transfer requests however the Club understands the player's desire to play at a higher level and has reluctantly allowed Barrett to speak to interested clubs that can match his playing and wage ambitions.
"It is not correct for certain sections of the media to suggest that all of our players were still unpaid for May. 95% of our players and staff have been paid for May with the remaining staff due to be paid in full in the near future."
