SPENCER CLOSE TO NEW DEAL

Posted on: Wed 19 May 2010

Southend United striker Scott Spencer is close to signing a one-year contract extension at Roots Hall.

The former Everton trainee scored four goals last season in five stars after signing during the January transfer window.

And now he looks set to commit himself for a further 12 months.

"I will be staying here next season," confirmed Spencer.

"It's a year extension so it's just a formality really and it's all close to being done, which is good news because I really enjoyed being with Southend and I'm happy be here."

Spencer's move to Southend came after leaving Rochdale and the 20-year-old scored on his debut against Huddersfield Town.

Further goals followed against Swindon Town, Walsall and Bristol Rovers before an ankle injury cut his season short.

He's still receiving treatment for the problem but expects to be fully fit by the start of pre-season.

"We're getting everything sorted but I'm sure I'll be fit for pre-season in July," he added.
