Goalscorer Franck Moussa believes goal difference could be vital in the Blues bid to avoid the drop this season.
Moussa scored his fourth and fifth goals of the campaign last night against Walsall to take him to the top of the Roots Hall scoring charts following the departure of Lee Barnard in January.
That follows on from Saturday's goal during Blues 2-2 draw against Carlisle United.
And the Belgium born midfielder knows that his side need to continue finding the back of the net across the board.
"We need wins and goal difference might be interesting as well towards the end of the season," Moussa told Blues Player.
"Getting as many goals as we can is just important as winning as that alone might not be enough.
"As a team we have to be very positive and get as many goals as possible."
Despite his brace against the Saddlers the product of Blues youth system was equally delighted with his assist for Scott Spencer's header in the second half.
"I was happy with my performance and scoring a couple of goals as well as the assist for Scott Spencer's one also," he said.
"The manager has said a lot to me about end product in the changing room and so I was happy to improve on that."
Southend find themselves just one place off safety after leapfrogging Exeter City last night on goal difference.
And Franck admitted it was a good feeling to be on the winning side for once.
He admitted: "It is a good feeling winning and it's something we haven't had lately
"We are not in a good position in the league and what we need are wins. Sometimes we have played well but not had anything to show for it and fortunately this time we did.
"I said after the last game that if we play positive football we can get out of this situation.
"There are a few games to go but I am sure if we can keep that mentality going we can do this."
