Striker Scott Spencer is desperate to play in all nine of Southend United's 'cup finals' between now and the end of the season.

The former Everton trainee bagged his third goal of the season last night against Walsall.

That helped Steve Tilson's side to a comfortable 3-0 victory, their first win in 2010, and now the 21-year-old hopes he can continue to spearhead Blues attack.

"The gaffer said to us we have nine cup finals left and we want to be in this division next season," Scott told Blues Player after the match.

"I am desperate to play in those cup finals and hopefully get a few more goals."

Spencer was recalled to the starting line-up for the first time since the start of February.

And he repaid boss Tilson's faith by heading in a second half goal to put United 2-0 ahead.

"I was very, very happy to be starting first of all and it was just a great game to be involved in," he said.

"A lot of lads played really well. Franck Moussa was brilliant and thoroughly deserved his man of the match and Anthony Grant was great also.

"Playing upfront with Scott Vernon was good and I really enjoyed it, I'm buzzing with my goal.

"I am here to score goals and that is what I want to do. To score a header was a great return as well as I have been working on my movement in the box and it came together for me."

United are now within a point of safety in League One as they bid to avoid relegation.

Having taken five points from their last three matches Southend now travel to Bristol Rovers on Saturday looking to extend that run.

Spencer added: "We are unbeaten in three matches now so hopefully we can push on and take everything a game at a time.

"If we keep putting in performances and working as hard as we can then we will do this.

"But we aren't looking further ahead than the next game as that is the most important thing.

"If we go away and we work hard we can get a result at Bristol Rovers.

"We need to shut their fans up and get them on their own sides back and then hopefully we can carry on."
