FRANCK HAILS FANS

Posted on: Sun 21 Mar 2010

Goalscorer Franck Moussa paid tribute to the Roots Hall crowd for sticking behind the team on Saturday.

Despite finding themselves 2-0 down against Carlisle United after only 13 minutes the Blues faithful continued to cheer the side on.

And it was their support that Moussa believed helped get United back into the match.

"We have to say thank you to the supporters who pushed us right until the end of the game," Franck told Blues Player at full-time.

"The position we are in we are going to need them to be behind us in every single game regardless of if we are winning or losing.

"They have to be our 12th man."

Moussa hit his third goal of the season after 25 minutes when he drove a left foot effort past Carlisle keeper Adam Collin.

That made it 2-1 before Adam Barrett powered home a header from a corner three minutes later.

And Moussa hailed the team's spirit for getting itself back on a level footing.

"It was obviously nice to score but looking at the game we conceded two early goals and that didn't help, although we showed good spirit to come back into the match," he said.

"Then it was a case of trying to find a third goal to give us the three points but unfortunately we didn't get it.

"It was gutting to concede those early goals, that is something that has happened a lot this season. But we showed good spirit to come back into the match and from then on we could have scored again.

"We are in a dogfight at the moment and it is going to be a case of needing whoever to score goals so I was happy to do my bit today."

Moussa was also left perplexed about the decision to send off Adam Barrett by referee Andy Woolmer.

"Adam's second booking was very strange as he was about to shoot and the lad got in the way," he added. "There was never any intention to foul anyone in that situation so the referee should have just given a free kick and got on with the game.

"But for some reason the referee seemed to want to send Adam off and that was a bizarre decision.

"To have the skipper sent off towards the end of the game didn't help as we were on top and that killed our momentum."

This latest draw means Southend are still four points from safety but Moussa confirmed the squad continue to have the belief that they can stay up this season.

"We definitely believe that we can get out of this position," he said.

"This is our club and it's our careers on the line. We are all trying to stick together to ensure that we turn this into a decent season in the end.

"It would be a real blow to finish on a low. I believe that we can still make it and it's just a case of doing it on the pitch."
