PAT DETERMINED FOR FANS

Posted on: Fri 19 Mar 2010

On loan central defender Pat Baldwin is determined to keep Southend United in League One for the supporters of the Blues.

Baldwin, currently on loan from Colchester United at Roots Hall, helped Southend to its first clean sheet since October last year on Saturday against Exeter City.

And the 27-year-old wants to repay the fantastic support he has received since his January switch by helping Southend to safety.

"This is a great club with fantastic supporters and all the lads are doing their best considering the circumstances," Baldwin, who has been told he has no future at Colchester United, said whilst speaking with Blues Player.

"Between now and the end of the season we are giving it our best shot to stay up.

"I am not thinking about my situation in the summer at the moment as I have spent a lot of my career doing that and it has affected me.

"At the moment that isn't even in the back of my mind, all I am concentrating on is keeping Southend United in this league."

Baldwin was part of a back four last Saturday that kept its first clean sheet since a 1-0 win against Gillingham at the end of October.

That ended a staggering run of 20 matches without shutting out the opposition.

And Baldwin is hoping for more of the same against Carlisle United on Saturday.

"Keeping clean sheets gives you a chance to win games," he said. "If you do your job at the back and can nick one or two goals then you can win a game.

"It is a bit of a relief to be honest as I have been here for a while now and we have conceded far too many goals.

"I have always said that you win and lose as a team and if you concede goals it is the whole team just like when you score them.

"Little things like not letting in goals are bound to give us a boost at the moment so that gives us something to build on going into Saturday's game."
