Defender Simon Francis has insisted that every match between now and the end of the season is a cup final.
Blues latest defeat against Hartlepool United saw Southend slip into the relegation zone for the first time this season.
United face fellow bottom four side Exeter City this weekend and Francis knows nothing but three points will be good enough.
"Saturday's match is a cup final for us and every single match after that are going to be our biggest games of the season," Francis told southendunited.co.uk.
"It has a massive physiological effect being in the bottom four.
"The gaffer put the league table up on the wall in the dressing room before the game just to reiterate what position we are in at the moment.
"We all had a good look at it and we know we are in a relegation battle there is no two ways about it.
"The dressing room is down after the match. I've always said that the team spirit is the best it has ever been at a club but right now everyone is hurting.
"Come this morning though everybody will be back up and ready to go again."
Southend faced an uphill struggle against Hartlepool United when they found themselves 2-0 down at half-time.
Two goals from former Roy O'Donovan, currently on loan at Victoria Park from Sunderland following similar spell at Roots Hall earlier this season, put the home side in the driving seat.
And although half-time brought an improvement, the damage was already done as Francis' side continue to look for their first win in 2010.
"We are gutted again obviously, like the last three matches really," he said.
"This match was definitely bigger than those considering that Hartlepool are in and around us. It was a six pointer."
Francis did nearly get his side back into the match late on as his shot crashed against the post.
It is the third time he has rattled the woodwork in four matches and its starting to get at the ex-Sheffield United full-back.
"It is really frustrating me at the moment with shots and free-kicks but as long as the team is winning and scoring that is all you can ask for. At the moment though that's not happening."
